The Opportunity

At Tier One, we're big believers in the power of aggressive issues/response to position a client as a market leader. We scan the media each day to educate ourselves about market trends and competitor actions, and make recommendations to our clients for opportunities to actively involve themselves in the industry dialogue. One of the competitive issues we'd been closely following for our client LiveDeal was the rumor of Google's entry into the online classifieds market.

Our Approach

On the afternoon of October 26, 2005, we read on a blog that Google planned to announce its classifieds entry, Google Base, the next day. We sprang into action and it looked like this: 
  • 3:00 pm: Rumors emerge of Google's planned move into online classifieds with imminent announcement of Google Base platform

  • 3:05 pm: Tier One consults with LiveDeal's executive team and recommends issuing an Advisory on LiveDeal's perspective on the Google's news

  • 4:00 pm: Tier One develops the specific messages and crafts the Advisory, which is distributed via PR Newswire's US1 circuit and emailed to key media contacts, with phone follow up

The Results

Based on that event, two quotes from LiveDeal appeared in Hof's blog on the BusinessWeek site. The quotes favorably positioned LiveDeal as a category expert and enabled us to capitalize on Google's news to increase awareness of LiveDeal and its leadership position in the online classifieds market. Since then, Tier One has continued to leverage the relationship we built with Hof to further spotlight LiveDeal as an online classifieds leader. 

Today, LiveDeal is ranked as one of the top 10 U.S. classifieds sites (ahead of established sites such as Yahoo! Classifieds) according to comScore data. More than one million unique visitors flock to the LiveDeal site each month, with more than $5 billion worth of merchandise listed on the site.
